Fetch Specialty & Emergency Veterinary Centers is seeking an detail-oriented Surgery Technician to join our Fort Myers team.
The Surgery Technician coordinates with the rest of the Fetch surgery team, specialty, and ER teams to ensure proper patient and client care. They work under the direct guidance and supervision of the Practice Manager and are critical to the success of Fetch and its team members.
Essential Functions
- Works closely with other experienced surgery technicians, assistants, doctors, and administrative teams to provide excellent care of the patients and our clients
- Knowledge and technical skills as listed below:
- Knowledge of triage for new consults and rechecks and sufficient knowledge to discuss estimates for diagnostics, procedures and/or treatments with the clients
- Proficient knowledge of surgery procedures and processes
- Surgical packs and preparation including autoclave and gas sterilizer
- TPLO, TECABO, BCS
- C-section, GDV, fracture repair
- Sound medical terminology knowledge and common disease processes and medical/surgical emergencies
- Knowledge of running in house lab machines and sending lab samples out
- Ability to recognize abnormal values
- Knowledge of positioning and taking radiographs and computerized tomography (CT) and relevant safety precautions
- Knowledge of anesthetic protocols used for surgery patients including:
- Commonly used sedatives and their side effects
- Drug calculations including CRIs
- Nursing skills include proper animal restraint, anesthesia monitoring, intubation of cats and dogs, catheter placement, phlebotomy, and performing treatments
- Provide anesthetic support throughout all phases beginning with sedation through induction, surgery, postoperative, extubation and recovery
- Recognize and communicate changes in patient condition
- Able to monitor and care for patients using state of the art equipment and protocols
- Pulse oximeter
- Electrocardiogram
- Ventilator
- Excellent communication skills with the clients and have the ability to provide nursing care for surgery patients
- Advanced nursing skills to include: central lines, sampling catheters, feeding tubes
- Cleaning, stocking and helping to maintain proper care of the surgical and hospital equipment
Required Education and Experience
- Certification or Associate’s Degree in a related field is a plus
- At least 2 years of experience in the veterinary field
- Strong & professional work ethic
